BDO
  • Client: BDO
  • Project: Yorkshire Report
  • Services: Copywriting, Editorial strategy

'Taking the region's temperature, studying its health and diagnosing the best course of treatment' is one way in which this unique Leeds-based publication has been described. Based on the results of Yorkshire's top 150 companies, each year it examines the performance of a notional 'Yorkshire Plc' in the context of the regional and national economy. The report is eagerly awaited by BDO clients and local press.

Lang wrote the first Yorkshire Report in 2007 and devised the distinctive tone, style and structure for subsequent editions – all of which we have written and edited. We work from material and figures supplied by BDO, and turn the numbers into an interesting, thought-provoking and media-worthy piece of narrative.

  • Project: Report Leadership – annual report writing guidance
  • Services: Copywriting, Editorial strategy

Report Leadership was a series of innovative, practical guides to promote best practice in company reporting. Bringing together the expertise of accountants, company directors and designers, we were responsible for shaping the projects editorially and all the copywriting.

The first publication was a set of guidelines on printed reports, together with a sample report for fictitious company – Generico – to demonstrate the recommendations in action. The resulting document has been widely praised for its radical but pragmatic approach and was endorsed by the Hundred Group of FDs as representing best practice. Responding to demand, two subsequent guides tackled remuneration reports and online reporting.

The report won a British Association of Communicators in Business (CiB) Award of Excellence.

Centrica
  • Client: Centrica
  • Project: Annual Report & Annual Review
  • Services: Copywriting, Editorial strategy

Lang was first approached by integrated energy group Centrica to produce a detailed critique of its 2006 annual report – in particular the way it communicated the group’s strategy.

On the strength of this, we were invited to write the 2007 annual report and review – producing the latter to an exceptionally tight deadline. In 2008, the critique focused on the corporate responsibility section of the report, which was subsequently added to our writing brief.

The designer for these publications was 35 Communications.
